The Kentucky coffeetree (Gymnocladus dioicus) is a tough, low-maintenance shade tree highly valued for its striking winter silhouette, adaptability to urban pollution, and virtual immunity to pests. It thrives in USDA Hardiness Zones 3 through 8.
Why Plant It? Tough as Nails: Highly resistant to drought, compacted soils, air pollution, and road salt. It thrives where other street and park trees fail.
Distinctive Appearance: It boasts some of the largest doubly-compound leaves of any native tree, offering a lush, tropical feel in the summer.
In winter, its thick, coarse branches create a dramatic, sculptural silhouette.
The Name: It gets its name from early American settlers who roasted and brewed its seeds as a coffee substitute when traditional coffee was scarce.
Growing & Care Requirements:
Zone Range: USDA Zone 3 to 8.
Sunlight: Prefers full sun (at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily).
Soil Requirements: Thrives in deep, moist, well-drained soil, but is highly adaptable to both alkaline and dry sites.
Mature Size: Large growing habit, reaching 60 to 75 feet tall with a 40 to 50-foot spread.
Growth Rate: Slow to moderate.
Important ConsiderationsSeed Pods: Female trees produce large, leathery brown seed pods that persist through the winter.
